Community based health issues are very critical in the operational districts. Malaria, Diarrhea and reproductive health are some of the major concern in terms of the poor level of community awareness, availability of the health services and road communication. Poor people living in the interior area often find it difficult to practice appropriate health practices. Moreover, traditional health practices and traditional healers play a major role in shaping the health of the community. These results are increased risk of communicable disease, child survival and maternal mortality. In view of this, SOVA has adopted twin approach of creating awareness to ensure appropriate health practices and strengthen the capacity of the local health service providers to reach out to the community health needs. Malnutrition of course, is another major concern for child survival, growth and child development. Regular training programmes are conducted for the community and the service providers including ASHA, AWW,ANM etc.. Community mobilization and sensitization programmes are conducted for regular routine immunization, child and mother care. Promotion of adolescent and sexual reproductive health is also ensured through awareness generation and regular counselling session.
Besides this we are creating health awareness through the voices of the tribal themselves to convince each other to rethink their deep-rooted myths and take better care of their health. SOVA is involved with strengthening community health systems. It organizes health camps for early diagnosis and increased access to Government Health Services. It facilitates immunization by organizing awareness camps. Our goal is not only to increase access to proper healthcare services and medicine, but to provide education that changes attitudes and behaviors so tribes actively choose to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
Promotion of WASH
South Orissa Voluntary Action (SOVA) has been into WASH initiative for the last few years working with the district administration, the tribal forums, community members and school and college students in in 450 villages of Rayagada and Koraput district where WASH has been a prioritized intervention. SOVA has been working with two PVTG (Particularly Primitive Tribal Group) in Rayagada district where WASH is a cross cutting approach in all health and education program. Apart from school wash program in about 700 schools, a community led approach to strengthen health, hygiene and sanitation issues in the remotest areas of the district has been a prime focus. The program focuses on capacity building of its stakeholders to bring practice level change in community behavior and simultaneously aware community on benefit of proper sanitary practices.
